USC Launches First-Gen Student Advisory Board

February 6, 2025

USC’s First-Generation Center has launched the First-Generation Student Advisory Board (FG SAB) to amplify first-gen student voices and strengthen support on campus. Formed in December, the board elected leaders in January and established committees focused on community service, programming, and student engagement. Their mission: advocate for first-gen students, create leadership opportunities, and bridge the gap between students and First-Gen Center staff.

Spring 2025 Leadership

  • President: Shalaia Myers (African American Studies & Psychology)
  • Vice President: Parth Dave (Biological Sciences)
  • Community Service Chair: Samantha Kohlmann (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology)
  • Programs & Activities Chair: Itzeli Cruz (Public Health)
  • Recorder: Emma Fuller (Geological Sciences)
  • Social Media/Marketing Chair: Aryana Hughey (Psychology)

This semester, the board will focus on building a sustainable structure, gathering student feedback, and launching initiatives that support first-gen success. Committee chairs will present top ideas in February, shaping the board’s priorities for Spring 2025.

As president of the First-Generation Student Advisory Board, it isn't just about holding a title; it's about establishing a path, empowering voices, and building a foundation of excellence for those who come after us.
