Founded in 1971, our program brings together history, literature, politics, art and more to explore African American life and culture in South Carolina, the American South and the wider world. We prepare students to lead with cultural understanding and a commitment to social equity. In African American studies courses, you’ll examine the past and present, challenge assumptions and expand your perspective on African American experiences.
