Professor Guggenmos joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina's Darla Moore School of Business during the summer of 2024 and teaches managerial accounting in the Professional MBA program. Prior to joining the University of South Carolina, Guggenmos was an assistant professor of accounting at the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, where he taught managerial accounting courses at the graduate-level. Professor Guggenmos is an award-winning teacher and researcher. During his time at Cornell University, Guggenmos was recognized as the 2020 recipient of the Class of 1992 Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. This award is given annually by graduating residential MBA students to honor the faculty member whom they believe most demonstrates the qualities of outstanding leadership and enduring educational influence.

Professor Guggenmos’ research examines the judgments and decisions made by preparers, users, and auditors of financial statements and disclosures, and methodological concerns faced by experimental accounting researchers. His work has been published in leading accounting journals, including: The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, The Journal of Accounting Research, and the Journal of Financial Reporting. He has also been awarded two competitive research grants from the Center for Audit Quality.

Guggenmos, a first-generation college student, received his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, his B.A. from Seattle University, and his A.A. from Tacoma Community College. Prior to his graduate studies, Guggenmos was an auditor in the Seattle, WA office of Deloitte and Touche, LLP. Ryan is also a certified public accountant in the state of South Carolina.
