Research
The Lewis lab is broadly interested in evolutionary ecology, which examines how interactions among and within species drive evolutionary processes and how that evolution, in turn, shapes ecological patterns and population traits. Our projects primarily investigate host-parasite interactions, the persistence and movement of microbes and pathogens in the environment, and factors that impede or facilitate adaptation. We use a combination of fieldwork and experimental evolution with microbes to address these questions. In the lab, our main model organisms include bacteriophages, Caenorhabditis elegans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens. Our fieldwork primarily focuses on water quality issues in freshwater and marine environments, particularly the monitoring of fecal indicator bacteria, assessing how these environments respond to perturbations, and evaluating the implications for human disease. Lastly, we are also interested in bioethics, particularly the responsible conduct of research, science outreach, and the regulation and implications of future technology.
