Research and Teaching Interests

My research advances athletic training education and clinical practice through patient-centered care, digital health, and simulation-based learning. I examine how athletic trainers and students develop and apply clinical reasoning, communication, and advanced healthcare skills to improve safety, equity, and patient outcomes. Using mixed-methods and multi-institutional collaborations, my work bridges classroom learning and clinical practice by leveraging simulation and reflective learning to reduce the theory-to-practice gap. My early scholarship established one of the first empirical foundations for telehealth in athletic training education and clinical care, informing widespread adoption during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Building on this work, I have led studies demonstrating how standardized patients, hybrid simulations, and clinical vignettes enhance clinical decision-making and confidence. More recently, my research has focused on defining, measuring, and teaching patient-centered care behaviors, Such as empathy, communication, social determinants of health, and health literacy, resulting in validated frameworks and assessment tools shaping national conversations on healthcare quality and equity.
