The University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law Judicial Scholars (“Judicial Scholars”) is a program designed to provide students with a unique opportunity to gain insight into the roles and functions of the courts of South Carolina and provide professional development opportunities within the judiciary.
Judicial Scholars is a paid, full-time, 9-week judicial internship for rising second-year law students enrolled at the Joseph F. Rice School of Law. Through this immersive program, students gain hands-on experience working alongside South Carolina justices, judges, law clerks, and staff attorneys within the state judiciary.
The Judicial Scholars intern for 3 weeks each at the Supreme Court of South Carolina, the South Carolina Court of Appeals, and the South Carolina Circuit Court. This rotation-based format provides scholars with a comprehensive view of the judicial system at every level.
“My experience with the Judicial Scholars program greatly affirmed my career goal
of pursuing a judicial clerkship. I began the program with the hopes of narrowing
down which level of judge I wanted to pursue. With all of my experience thus far,
I have come to enjoy trial-level courts. This led me to want to pursue a federal district
and/or state circuit-level court.”
