The University Band, under the direction of Benjamin Pouncey, provides an inclusive and engaging ensemble experience for students from across campus, welcoming musicians from every academic discipline. Committed to artistic growth, meaningful music-making, and community, the ensemble performs a diverse repertoire spanning traditional wind band literature, contemporary works, and music from a variety of styles and traditions.

In addition to its regular concert performances, the University Band actively collaborates with School of Music faculty, guest artists, and composers, and has participated in commissioning and recording projects that contribute to the advancement of wind band repertoire. The ensemble combines meaningful artistic experiences with a welcoming community, creating a musical home where students can continue performing, cultivate a lifelong engagement with the arts, and contribute to the vibrant musical life of the University of South Carolina.

Ensemble Information

In the fall semester, the University Band rehearses on Mondays from 7–9 p.m. and performs one concert in November. In the spring semester, two University Bands offer students the flexibility to choose the ensemble that best fits their schedule. One ensemble rehearses Mondays and Wednesdays, and the other rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays, with both bands meeting from 5–6:30 p.m. and presenting two concerts during the semester. All concerts are held in the Koger Center for the Arts.

Select instruments are available for rental through the School of Music, and University Band members may request access to School of Music practice rooms.

How To Join

No audition is required to join the University Band.

Fall semester: Enroll in MUSC 122, Section 001 (1–2 credit hours) M, 7–9 p.m.

Spring Semester: Enroll in MUSC 122, Section 001 (1–2 credit hours) T/Th 5–6:30 p.m. - or - MUSC 122, Section 002 (1–2 credit hours) M/W 5–6:30 p.m.
