As a rare triple-threat in academia, Dr. Allen’s experience and versatility in dance, voice and choreography will bolster the school’s advancing commitment to preparing the musical workforce for South Carolina and beyond.
The concentration was launched in August 2021 with a small group of students interested in a music degree focused on musical theatre. Interest has grown exponentially and continues to build momentum. Participants come from diverse backgrounds and interests, spanning classical, contemporary musical theatre, pop, rock, R&B, gospel and crossover genres.
Allen applauds his colleagues who have contributed to the tremendous growth of musical theater at USC and is eager to support its expansion.
“There is a great deal of exciting potential ahead for the musical theatre concentration, and I am honored to be stepping into this role. Having worked closely with many of the students already, I’ve seen firsthand the level of talent, dedication and curiosity they bring to the program,” says Allen. “Their drive to grow as singing actors is inspiring, and I’m excited to help create more opportunities for them to develop as complete artists within a supportive and rigorous environment.”
Allen received a Bachelor of Music, Vocal Performance and a Bachelor of Arts, Theatre (minor in Dance) from Texas Tech University; a Master of Music, Vocal Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance; and a Doctor of Musical Arts, Vocal Performance, from the University of South Carolina. His dance training includes extensive coursework not only at Texas Tech but also at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, as well as participation in numerous dance conventions and continued work with the Skinner Releasing Technique.
He currently serves as President of South Carolina NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), as Communications Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region of NATS, and serves as AV producer at Grace Lutheran Church in Rock Hill.
