Payroll Deductions

Learn more about payroll deductions and how they differ from direct deposit. The FAQs explain how deductions are processed, who to contact for voluntary deduction changes, and where to go for questions about benefit-related deductions.

Payroll deductions such as parking, Family Fund and United Way must be stopped by contacting that department directly. For other types of deductions, contact the Payroll department.

Court or state ordered deductions (such as child support or tax levies) cannot be stopped by the Payroll Office.

If you have benefit deduction related questions, please reach out to the USC Benefits Office at benefits@mailbox.sc.edu.

Modifications are implemented with the vendor, and they relay changes electronically to USC. For questions regarding Colonial Life/Trustmark premiums, please reach out to the USC Benefits Office at benefits@mailbox.sc.edu.

All 9-month employees pay additional premiums each pay period. These additional premiums, referred to as escrow, are used to cover insurance premiums during the following summer months when the employee is not receiving a paycheck.

Mid-year benefit changes resulting from a qualifying life event or Open Enrollment may result in adjustments to the employee’s escrow amount.

USC receives official notification directly from the applicable government agency regarding these legally mandated deductions. Any changes or adjustments must be requested by the employee directly through the appropriate government agency.

USC cannot make changes to these deductions until official notification is received from the government agency.
