McNair Conversations on the American South: Reflections on a Football Legacy

Hall of Fame Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer joined the University of South Carolina community on March 18 at the Koger Center for the Arts for this year’s McNair Conversations on the American South: Reflections on a Football Legacy.

Hosted by the Institute for Southern Studies in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences, the event featured an in-depth conversation between Beamer and historian Dr. Mark Smith. The discussion explored Beamer’s coaching legacy, his impact on college football across the region and his perspective on what it means to be Southern.

Beamer, who led Virginia Tech for 29 seasons, remains the winningest coach in program history and is widely recognized for shaping the identity of “Beamer Ball.” Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018, he is considered one of the sport’s most influential leaders. He is also the father of University of South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer.

The event drew a strong audience, with free posters available to the first 200 attendees and registration required due to high demand.

Attendees and those who were unable to attend can explore highlights from the evening through the event photo gallery and full recording.
