Dr. Mark Smith
Mark Smith is the Director of the Institute for Southern Studies and Carolina Distinguished Professor of History. He writes about the American South and the history of the senses. He recently published A Sensory History Manifesto, which is a brief and timely meditation on the field.

Dr. Matt Simmons
Dr. Simmons is the Assistant Director of the Institute for Southern Studies, where he regularly teaches the Institute’s Southern literature survey and SOST305, an interdisciplinary examination of the South since 1980. He also heads up the Institute’s Digital US South Initiative, which works with scholars and researchers to create public-facing digital projects to promote and disseminate scholarship and information about the American South.

Dr. Jennifer Gunter
Dr. Gunter serves as the director of the Collaborative on Race at the University of South Carolina. She is a historian who specializes in the intersections of region, gender, race, health, law, and activism.
